Florida records record leprosy cases in 2025, adds 2026 cases

The Florida Department of Health said the state recorded a record 36 cases of Hansen's disease in 2025 and added 17 cases in 2026, with most infections occurring in central counties. Earlier reports noted that the 17 cases in 2026 represented a modest increase from the previous year and that the rise was concentrated in central Florida. State health officials also indicated that contact with nine-banded armadillos may explain some of the locally acquired infections, a link highlighted in data for both 2025 and 2026.
