President Trump to Speak at Rescheduled White House Correspondents' Dinner
President Trump will address the White House Correspondents' Association's make-up dinner on Friday at the Waldorf Astoria, following the April shooting that halted the original event.
President Donald Trump is scheduled to speak at the White House Correspondents' Association's second dinner on Friday, held at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in Washington. The event follows the April incident in which an armed individual breached security at the Washington Hilton, prompting Secret Service agents to fire on the suspect.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the president "looks forward to finishing what he started before a despicable assassination attempt derailed the original event back in April," and described the upcoming program as "very entertaining and memorable."
The dinner, which will feature a performance by mentalist Oz Pearlman, is expected to be smaller than the original gathering but otherwise similar in format. Association past president and CBS News senior White House correspondent Weijia Jiang noted that the program includes enhanced security measures, such as a private security firm working with the Secret Service, mandatory QR-code checks and photo-ID verification for all guests.
Secret Service Director Sean Curran told reporters that each venue is reassessed before presidential events and that an advance team is already on site to ensure safety. The association will also present awards recognizing a Secret Service officer who was injured during the April shooting and the Washington Hilton staff for their service.
Jiang emphasized the importance of protecting attendees, stating, "It was incredibly important to have the safety of our guests to be the top priority."
