Apple's upcoming MacBook Ultra to feature thinner design and OLED display

Summary

Apple is planning a new high-end MacBook model with a slimmer chassis, OLED screen and a hole-punch camera, marking the most significant external redesign since 2021.

Apple is preparing a new high-end laptop that will be thinner and lighter than the current 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, which have remained at 0.61 inches (15.5 mm) thick since 2021. The redesign is expected to include a hybrid OLED display that replaces the mini-LED backlight, allowing the lid to be slimmer, especially in its upper half.

According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, the changes could constitute a "true overhaul" of the MacBook Pro line. The notch that has been present on the display since 2021 is likely to be replaced by a pill-shaped hole-punch camera, a shift first noted in a roadmap from research firm Omdia and later confirmed by Bloomberg. The new cutout is designed to accommodate an interactive Dynamic Island, and macOS 27’s "Search or Ask" Spotlight interface already features a dark, pill-shaped design that matches the anticipated hardware change.

Omdia also reports that Samsung Display will supply slightly larger 14.3-inch and 16.3-inch panels, which could reduce bezel width if the chassis remains largely unchanged. Apple is said to be adding a reinforced hinge to prevent display wobble, though it is unclear whether the lid will tilt further back than the current model.

Despite the external updates, the laptop is expected to retain many existing elements. Bloomberg noted in February that the keyboard and trackpad will remain unchanged, and the device will continue as a conventional clamshell in both sizes rather than adopting a detachable or convertible form. Ports such as HDMI, MagSafe and an SD card slot, reinstated in the 2021 redesign, are not reported to be removed.
