NYC mayor pushes back deadline for pied-à-terre tax exemption

Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Finance Commissioner Richard Lee announced that the deadline for applying for an exemption from New York City's new pied-à-terre surcharge has been pushed back to Sept.  18, giving owners additional time to demonstrate primary-residence status. The extension follows a series of actions to implement the tax on luxury secondary homes valued at $5 million or more.

Earlier this month the mayor warned owners that the annual surcharge, expected to raise about $500 million, would be levied and the Department of Finance began mailing notices. The department also published a searchable list of more than 900,000 properties that could be subject to the tax, prompting criticism from privacy advocates and real-estate groups who said the data could expose owners to harassment. In response, many owners have begun considering trusts and LLCs to shield their identities, although the tax liability would still apply.
