Creators Explain Unskippable, Spoiler-Filled Title Sequence for HBO Max’s Stuart Fails To Save the Universe

Resumen

Showrunners Chuck Lorre, Bill Prady and Zak Penn said the series’ opening credits were designed to be unskippable and to include playful spoilers, while composer Danny Elfman created ten variations of the theme music.

HBO Max’s new series Stuart Fails To Save the Universe features an opening credit sequence that cannot be skipped and includes brief spoiler messages. The four-person cast—Stuart, Denise, Bert and Kripke—travel through alternate realities, and each episode’s credits display fourth-wall jokes and a line such as “Barry Dies,” referring to a character who is killed early in the story.

Showrunners Chuck Lorre, Bill Prady and Zak Penn said the idea was a response to viewers often skipping title sequences. Lorre explained, "I thought, ‘What if we made a title sequence that you could skip but you shouldn’t?’" The team then asked composer Danny Elfman to write a theme and produce ten variations for the ten-episode run. Elfman said he was asked to create multiple versions and found the task “really fun,” noting that each episode’s music was mixed to match its tone.

The creators also discussed the inclusion of spoilers in the credits. Penn said the team wanted to “keep ourselves entertained and do things that were different,” adding that a simple line like “Barry Dies” was meant to be a light-hearted joke rather than a major plot reveal. Prady said the approach was intended to make viewers laugh and to play with the current online culture surrounding spoilers.
