WNBA suspends Seattle Storm co-owner for confrontation with anti-trans activists at game

Resumen

Seattle Storm co-owner Celeste Keaton was fined and barred from five home games after a dispute with two anti-trans activists seated courtside, the league said.

The Women's National Basketball Association announced that Celeste Keaton, a co-owner of the Seattle Storm, has been fined and suspended for five home games following a confrontation with two spectators who displayed anti-trans messages during a Storm-Indiana Fever game. The two women, identified as a Washington teenager named Ahnaleigh Wilson and an unnamed companion, wore shirts from the XX-XY Athletics brand, a company that promotes opposition to transgender rights, and held signs praising WNBA player Sophie Cunningham for her comments on gender-segregated sports.

According to statements from the spectators, Keaton approached them and said, "Jesus loves everyone," before the exchange escalated. Wilson reported that Keaton later called the women "fucking insane" and told them to stop "pulling this shit." Keaton has not provided a comment on the incident.

Storm majority owner Ginny Gilder issued an apology, saying the organization is committed to an inclusive environment for all fans. The WNBA confirmed the disciplinary action but did not disclose the fine amount. The league said the sanction reflects its policies on respectful conduct toward spectators.

Cunningham and the Fever said they were unaware of the protest and had no involvement with the spectators. The incident follows previous controversy surrounding Cunningham's remarks on transgender athletes and a prior on-court altercation with another player.
