Defense Secretary Requests $67 Billion for Iran Conflict Amid Earlier Claims of Success

Resumen

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth asked Congress for an additional $67 billion to fund the war with Iran, contradicting earlier statements that the operation had already crippled Iran’s military.

CNN host Laura Coates highlighted a contrast between Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth’s earlier remarks about the success of Operation Epic Fury and his recent request for new funding before the Senate Appropriations Committee. Hegseth told reporters in April that the operation had "decimated Iran’s military and rendered it combat ineffective for years to come," but on Tuesday he asked lawmakers to approve $67 billion to sustain the effort, noting that the war had already cost $37.5 billion.

"The defense secretary and joint chiefs chairman spent hours before the Senate today, facing questions about the cost, strategy and endgame of the war with Iran," Coates said. He warned that Iran could exert control over the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil transit route, if U.S. naval pressure were reduced. Hegseth also cited shortfalls in munitions and equipment, saying they threaten the ability to pay service members and maintain operations. Earlier in June, he dismissed reports of dwindling U.S. weapons stockpiles as a media narrative, a stance that appears to have shifted in light of the new funding request. The senator’s testimony linked the budget shortfall to decisions made by the previous administration, placing responsibility on former President Joe Biden for the perceived deficit.
