FIFA Confirms Leandro Paredes Was Not Issued a Red Card After World Cup Final

Resumen

FIFA said Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes did not receive a red card following the World Cup final, but a disciplinary investigation into the post-match incident has been launched.

Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes was not shown a red card for his conduct after the World Cup final, FIFA confirmed on Monday. The governing body’s match tracker initially listed a red card for Paredes after Spain’s 1-0 victory, but the entry was removed and no sanction was recorded.

FIFA announced that it has appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to examine the altercation that occurred after the final whistle at MetLife Stadium. The prosecutor can recommend disciplinary proceedings against players, clubs or associations.

Video from the incident shows Paredes grabbing Spain defender Eric Garcia by the throat and pushing Spain midfielder Gavi to the ground. Additional footage appears to show Argentina defender Nahuel Molina striking Spain captain Rodri and assistant coach Roberto Ayala making contact with Spain’s Dani Olmo.

"FIFA will investigate the post-match events and take appropriate action where necessary," a FIFA spokesperson said.

The investigation will determine whether any further disciplinary measures will be imposed on those involved.
