The New York Times has published a follow-up report on a Qatar-donated aircraft that was refurbished with taxpayer funds for use by the president. The investigation found that the plane lacks several security systems present on the existing presidential aircraft, including a lower-level emergency exit, backup power capacity, and an advanced anti-missile system. The newspaper also noted that the aircraft required new pilot training equipment and that a full retrofit would have taken years rather than months.
According to the report, U.S. officials received a credible threat against the president while traveling, prompting a temporary return to the older aircraft. The Times said the threat was not directed specifically at the refurbished plane.
The administration previously issued subpoenas seeking phone records of journalists who reported on the aircraft, as well as records of their family members. A federal judge ordered the subpoenas withdrawn, citing procedural violations. A Department of Justice spokesperson responded that the investigation into alleged leaks of classified information remains ongoing.
The Justice Department also issued a nondisclosure order to a technology company in connection with the subpoenas, which the company later challenged in court.
The Times' reporting highlights concerns about the aircraft's readiness and the legal disputes surrounding press coverage of the issue.
