Vice President JD Vance and Usha Vance announce birth of fourth child, first sitting VP father in 150 years

Resumen

Vice President JD Vance and second lady Usha Vance said their son Alec Neel Vance was born on Sunday, marking the first birth to a sitting U.S. vice president in more than a century and a half.

Vice President JD Vance and his wife, second lady Usha Vance, announced on Sunday that their son Alec Neel Vance was born at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. The baby joins the couple’s three older children – Ewan, 9; Vivek, 6; and Mirabel, 4. In a joint statement posted to social media, the Vances said the mother and infant are healthy and thanked the medical staff.

The birth is the first recorded instance of a child being born to a sitting vice president since the 19th century, when Vice President Schuyler Colfax’s son was born in 1870 and Vice President John C. Calhoun’s son in 1829, according to the White House Historical Association.

The Vances have previously highlighted concerns about declining birth rates in the United States. At a 2025 anti-abortion rally, Vice President Vance said, "I want more babies in the United States of America." The couple’s growing family has drawn public attention, partly because Usha Vance is the daughter of Indian immigrants and because births among senior officials in the current administration have been noted recently.

"We are excited to announce that our baby boy, Alec Neel Vance, was born this morning. Usha and the baby are happy and healthy, and our kids are overjoyed to meet their little brother," the statement read.

The Vance family frequently travels on official trips, with the children accompanying their parents on Air Force Two.
