Indiana Fever defeat New York Liberty 108-88 as Liberty struggle in third quarter
The Indiana Fever rallied in the third quarter to beat the New York Liberty 108-88 on Saturday, extending the Liberty's recent losing streak to eight of their last ten games.
Indiana Fever overcame New York Liberty 108-88 on Saturday, snapping a run of close contests with a dominant third-quarter performance. The Fever outscored the Liberty 30-12 in the period, propelled by Kelsey Mitchell's 14 points, while the Liberty managed only five field goals.
New York entered the game after a six-day layoff caused by a travel disruption that moved a previously scheduled Thursday matchup in Dallas to Monday. Despite extra practice time, the Liberty were unable to sustain their early lead, which stood at four points at halftime.
Liberty forward Breanna Stewart said the game was intended to demonstrate the team's progress, but the result highlighted ongoing challenges. "The feeling after a loss like this is you have to find a way to stop bleeding," Stewart said.
Indiana, playing the second night of a back-to-back, limited star guard Caitlin Clark's minutes but still managed 18 offensive rebounds and 30 points off New York's 17 turnovers. Fever captain Sabrina Ionescu noted the team is "in a little bit of a rut" and emphasized the need to improve before the All-Star break.
The Liberty, now 13-12 with two games remaining before the break, have lost eight of their last ten contests and are missing key players Leonie Fiebich (left foot injury) and Satou Sabally (concussion protocol). Coach Chris DeMarco said the bench rotation was still being evaluated, citing the performances of Marine Fauthoux and Anneli Maley.
The loss leaves the Liberty seeking to reverse the trend as the season approaches its mid-point.
