U.S. Service Member Killed as Iran-U.S. Conflict Expands in Iraq and Jordan

Resumen

A U.S. soldier died in northern Iraq during a drone disposal operation, and unidentified remains were found in Jordan after an Iranian missile attack that killed two other service members, bringing U.S. fatalities to 17.

A U.S. service member was killed in northern Iraq when fragments from a controlled detonation of an Iranian drone struck the soldier, U.S. officials said. The same week, unidentified remains were recovered at a site in Jordan where an Iranian missile barrage killed two American soldiers and left a third missing, raising the confirmed U.S. death toll in the conflict to 17.

The incidents occurred amid a surge of attacks by Iran and its proxies on regional infrastructure, including bridges, water-treatment plants and oil facilities, prompting a rise in global oil prices. The U.S. military responded with strikes on Iranian coastal surveillance, air-defense installations and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) units it said were responsible for the Jordan attacks.

Iran retaliated with missile and drone strikes on Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan, targeting U.S. bases and commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. Jordan’s air defenses intercepted three missiles, while a fourth landed in an unpopulated area. Video footage showed smoke over King Hussein International Airport in Aqaba following the attack.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the loss of the soldiers “only stiffens our resolve.” The United States is also deploying additional aircraft, including F-16s from Germany and F-35s from Britain, along with aerial refueling assets, to the region.

Iran’s IRGC reported that two oil tankers were forced to stop after attempting to transit a route in the Strait of Hormuz that Tehran has warned against, though the group did not claim responsibility for the strikes.

Jordan, which hosts nearly 4,000 U.S. troops, has become a focal point of the fighting. Recent attacks on Jordanian bases have wounded dozens of American service members and damaged helicopters. The U.S. and Jordan continue to discuss expanding their defense partnership, while Jordan relies heavily on U.S. economic and military aid.

The escalation follows a brief cease-fire that ended in mid-June, and no diplomatic negotiations have been reported in the past week.
