Rory McIlroy said the two-shot penalty given to Bryson DeChambeau for improving the line of his backswing was warranted, describing the incident as careless and disruptive to the tournament.
"I think there's no doubt that he improved the line of his backswing. Whether it was careless or intentional, the two-shot penalty was justified," McIlroy told reporters.
He added that the episode delayed tee times for players and volunteers and called the situation "not a great look," suggesting DeChambeau's actions appeared performative and attention-seeking.
"I'm not particularly fond of him. I think a lot of it’s performative, for attention. To hold the tournament hostage like that, with everyone waiting on him to depart, I didn't feel like it was a great look," he said.
The Open Championship has seen low scores from early leaders, including Ryan Fox's 62 on Thursday and rounds of 62 by Lucas Herbert and Sam Burns on Wednesday. DataGolf projects the winning total to fall between ten and thirteen strokes under par, with weather expected to remain similar on Sunday, featuring light morning winds that may increase in the afternoon. Analysts note that a player posting a -5 or -6 after the third round could gain an early tee time on Sunday and potentially contend for the title.
