Severe thunderstorms bring high winds, flooding risk to Northeast
The National Weather Service warned of winds exceeding 70 mph, flash-flood threats and a tornado watch affecting areas from Baltimore to New York City on Saturday.
A series of thunderstorms moved across the Northeast on Saturday, bringing strong winds, heavy rain and a tornado watch. The National Weather Service identified wind gusts over 70 miles per hour as the primary hazard for a corridor stretching from Baltimore to New York City, and noted a small chance of tornadoes. > "A tornado watch is in effect through 9 p.m. Saturday for portions of Delaware, eastern Maryland, New Jersey and southeast Pennsylvania," the service said.
The storms also posed a risk of scattered heavy rain capable of causing flash flooding from the Ohio Valley through the Mid-Atlantic to southern New England, with New York City, Newark and Philadelphia highlighted as high-risk locations. Flood watches, severe thunderstorm watches and the tornado watch were issued across parts of the region, and forecasters advised the public to monitor for any upgrade to warnings, which require immediate protective action.
