Lucas Herbert posts 62 but falls short of major record at British Open

Resumen

Lucas Herbert shot an 62 in the second round of the British Open at Royal Birkdale, tying the major-championship low-score record but missing a chance to set a new record of 61.

Lucas Herbert carded a 62 in the second round of the British Open on Friday at Royal Birkdale, tying the major-championship low-score record but missing a chance to set a new record of 61. The 30-year-old, who plays on the LIV Golf circuit, was 9-under-par after nine birdies and stood on the 17th tee with a potential 61, but a par on 17 and a three-putt bogey on 18 left him at 8-under-par 62.

Herbert said the crowd’s support made the experience “very cool” but expressed disappointment at not achieving the record, adding that he was “proud” to join the list of players who have shot 62 in a major. He finished the round with birdies on 11, 12 and 16, and his front-nine 28 tied the major-championship record for a nine-hole score.

After Herbert’s round, Sam Burns posted his own 62, holing out from a greenside bunker on the 18th to finish with a birdie-filled round that moved him from 3-over to 5-under.

Cam Smith, Herbert’s Ripper Golf Club captain, noted the Australian’s confidence and strong iron play, while fellow Aussie Adam Scott said Herbert’s game suits links courses. Herbert, playing his 18th major, has previously tied for 13th at the 2022 PGA Championship and tied for 15th at the 2022 British Open.
