Испания secured its second World Cup trophy on Sunday in New Jersey, defeating Argentina 2-1 after extra time. The Spanish side, coached by Luis de la Fuente, maintained an unbeaten record throughout the tournament, conceding just one goal across all matches.
The 26-year-old average squad, which included teenagers such as Pau Cubarsi and Lamine Yamal, progressed from a 0-0 group-stage draw with Cape Verde to victories over Saudi Arabia, Uruguay, Austria, Portugal, Belgium, and France. Substitute Mikel Merino scored late winners against Portugal and Belgium, while Ferran Torres netted the decisive goal in the final's 106th minute.
In the semifinal, Spain's midfield trio of Dani Olmo, Rodri and Fabian Ruiz dominated possession, limiting France to long-range attempts and earning a 2-0 win. The same tactical approach was used in the final, where Spain held 65 percent possession and limited Argentina to two off-target shots.
"We focused on controlling the game and staying compact," de la Fuente said after the match.
Argentina's frustration culminated in a second-yellow card for Enzo Fernández in stoppage time of extra time. Spain's victory extends its unbeaten run to 38 matches and positions the young squad for future tournaments, with de la Fuente's contract extended through 2028.
