Senate Intelligence Committee Advances Trump’s DNI Nominee Clayton by Party-Line Vote
The Senate Intelligence Committee voted 9-8 along party lines to advance President Trump’s nominee Jay Clayton as director of the Office of National Intelligence, according to The New York Times. NBC News reported that the committee held a hearing on Clayton, a U. S. Attorney, to consider his confirmation to replace acting director Bill Pulte.
During the hearing, CNBC noted that Clayton declined to confirm the 2020 election result and was questioned about a Georgia election office raid and recent subpoenas of New York Times reporters. PBS said he avoided using the word “won” to describe Biden’s victory, prompting criticism from Democratic senators, and Substack added that Senator Jon Ossoff repeatedly asked who won the 2020 election, which Clayton refused to answer. The committee’s vote moves the nomination to the full Senate for final confirmation.
