Senate Intelligence Committee probes nominee Jay Clayton over 2020 election remarks

Resumen

During his confirmation hearing for director of national intelligence, Jay Clayton avoided using the word “won” to describe Biden’s 2020 victory, prompting criticism from Democratic senators and discussion of agency size reforms.

U.S. attorney Jay Clayton appeared before the Senate Intelligence Committee for his nomination as director of national intelligence, a role focused on foreign threats and national security. Democratic senators repeatedly asked him to confirm that Joe Biden won the 2020 election, but Clayton answered only that Biden was "certified" as president, refusing to use the term "won."

Senators Jon Ossoff and Mark Warner expressed concern that the nominee could not directly answer a basic question about the election outcome, while Republican chairman Tom Cotton framed the hearing as an opportunity to discuss the size and scope of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI). Clayton said the ODNI’s primary function is overseas, and suggested the agency should pull back from operational roles.

Former intelligence official Fred Fleitz, now vice chair of the America First Policy Institute, praised Clayton’s leadership and congressional experience, but agreed that Democrats were using the hearing to generate talking points for upcoming elections. Fleitz also supported Chairman Cotton’s proposal to reduce the ODNI’s bureaucracy, describing it as “bloated” and arguing that a leaner structure would deliver intelligence more efficiently to the president.

The committee is expected to vote on Clayton’s nomination early next week, with the outcome depending on whether all nine Republican members support him against unanimous Democratic opposition.
