White House border czar pushes ICE body-camera rollout after shootings
White House immigration adviser Tom Homan urged the deployment of body-worn cameras for ICE arrest teams after two fatal shootings in Texas and Maine. According to Homeland Security officials, a recent government shutdown had postponed the purchase and rollout of such cameras despite congressional funding. The Department of Homeland Security later announced that every ICE arrest team would be equipped with at least one body-camera, citing the same shootings as the catalyst for the mandate.
In comments to reporters, ICE official Tom Homan said investigations would determine responsibility for the incidents and stressed the importance of complying with lawful stops. He also noted that the administration had secured new DHS funding to expand camera use among agents. Homan concluded that equipping officers with body cameras is essential for accountability and officer safety.
