Nolan's "The Odyssey" Reaches $728 Million Worldwide in 12 Days

Résumé

"The Odyssey" has earned $727.9 million globally after 12 days, placing it fourth among 2026 releases and positioning it for a potential billion-dollar total.

"The Odyssey" has earned $727.9 million at the global box office after 12 days, making it the fourth-highest-grossing film of 2026. The Christopher Nolan epic generated $320.5 million in the United States and $407.4 million in overseas markets.

The film trails only "Toy Story 5" ($1.02 billion), "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" ($1.001 billion) and "Michael" ($1.001 billion) among this year’s releases. Analysts expect "The Odyssey" to join the billion-dollar club in the coming week.

The movie has not yet opened in China, the world’s second-largest market, but a release is scheduled for August 14 on roughly 800 IMAX screens and thousands of standard auditoriums.

Competing releases include Sony and Marvel’s "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," set to debut on Friday. Projections suggest "The Odyssey" could bring in $50-$60 million in its third weekend.

With a production budget of $250 million, the film is Nolan’s most expensive project to date and is on track to surpass his earlier titles "The Dark Knight" and "The Dark Knight Rises" as his highest-grossing work.

Adapted from Homer’s ancient poem and starring Matt Damon as Odysseus, the movie is the first feature shot entirely with IMAX cameras. IMAX screenings have contributed $140 million to the total, making it the second-fastest title after "Avengers: Endgame" to exceed $100 million in ten days.
