Wildfire Smoke from Canada and Minnesota Triggers Widespread US Air Quality Alerts

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency issued an air-quality alert as smoke from Canadian and Minnesota wildfires spread across the Great Lakes region into the Northeast. Fox Weather warned that plumes from dozens of fires in western Ontario and northern Minnesota were expected to move eastward, bringing hazardous air quality and reduced visibility to the I-95 corridor. The New York Times noted that a high-pressure heat dome trapped the smoke, intensifying heat and prompting air-quality alerts across the Northeast. Subsequent reports from WBUR and ABC7 confirmed that the plume triggered hazardous alerts in New England, with Boston recording an AQI of about 130 and New York and parts of New Jersey placed under an advisory. CBS News and the Guardian reported that the smoke reached more than 20 states, prompting unhealthy to hazardous alerts and urging residents to stay indoors and use masks.

State agencies in Maryland, Pennsylvania and South Carolina issued Code Red or Code Purple alerts, describing the conditions as hazardous and recommending limited outdoor activity. The spread also led to event cancellations and business closures ahead of the World Cup final, according to CNN. BBC noted that Ontario’s premier asked the United States for assistance as the haze affected areas from Winnipeg to the Midwest. Later, the National Weather Service warned of persistent smoke while Michigan officials demanded a response from Canada, and Fox Weather said incoming storms were expected to push the smoke out of the eastern United States. President Trump said he might impose tariffs on Canada because of the smoke, as reported by NPR.
