Jordan Walker Wins Home Run Derby Amid Booing of Non-Local Competitors
Kyle Schwarber won his semifinal round and Jordan Walker claimed the Home Run Derby title, while Philadelphia fans repeatedly booed participants other than their hometown players.
Philadelphia's Citizens Bank Park turned the Home Run Derby into a hostile environment for most competitors, with the crowd directing boos toward anyone not representing the home team. The jeering began during the pre-event introductions and continued throughout the competition.
Kyle Schwarber, a Phillies regular, advanced past the semifinals after posting nine home runs, while Boston's Willson Contreras fell short despite a late surge. Schwarber set a final-round target of 11 homers.
St. Louis Cardinals rookie Jordan Walker, making his first All-Star appearance, faced the loudest opposition when he tied Schwarber's total with five consecutive hits. He responded with a sixth straight home run, reaching 12 and securing the Derby championship. The crowd's boos faded after his victory.
"We’re here to support our guys, but we expect a great show from everyone," a Phillies spokesperson said after the event.
Walker’s performance was described in the event’s promotional material as a dramatic, walk-off finish.
