Summary

Senator Lindsey Graham's remains were honored in a Capitol Rotunda ceremony and a National Cathedral funeral on Tuesday, with President Trump delivering the eulogy and foreign leaders expected to attend.

Washington — Senator Lindsey Graham, 71, was commemorated on Tuesday with a Capitol Rotunda ceremony followed by a funeral at the National Cathedral. The Capitol service, closed to the public, featured an Armed Forces Body Bearer team and a Capitol Police memorial guard in recognition of his military and legislative service. Senate Majority Leader John Thune said, "For so many of us in the Senate and the House, myself included, Lindsey was more than a colleague, he was a friend. From the military to state politics to decades of representing South Carolinians in Congress, Lindsey dedicated his life to giving back through public service."

President Donald Trump delivered the eulogy at the 2 p.m. cathedral service, which is also expected to be attended by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Graham, a four-term senator known for his foreign-policy stance, had returned from a recent visit to Ukraine where he discussed new U.S. sanctions on Russia.

A medical examiner ruled the cause of death an aortic dissection linked to arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease. After the Washington ceremonies, a procession in South Carolina will include a State Guard escort, law-enforcement honors and an F-16 flyover before concluding at the First Baptist Church of Columbia, where a private family burial will follow.

Senator Darrell Graham, appointed to complete her brother’s term, thanked those honoring the late senator in a statement.
