摘要

New Zealand actor Sam Neill died in Sydney at age 78 after a battle with blood cancer, prompting tributes from colleagues and fans.

New Zealand actor Sam Neill, best known for his role as Dr. Alan Grant in the 1993 film Jurassic Park and its 2022 sequel, died in Sydney on Monday at the age of 78. He had been diagnosed with stage-3 blood cancer in 2022 and underwent chemotherapy and CAR T-cell therapy, but was reportedly cancer-free at the time of his death. Family members described his passing as sudden and unexpected, and an acting colleague said his immune system had been weakened by treatment and that he had recently suffered pneumonia, though no official cause of death was released.

Neill’s career spanned more than four decades and included a range of film and television roles. He appeared in titles such as Omen III: The Final Conflict, The Hunt for Red October, and cameo appearances in Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder. He earned a Golden Globe nomination for the series Reilly, Ace of Spies and later received Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for the miniseries Merlin. Television credits also included The Tudors, the 2015 adaptation of And Then There Were None, and a recurring role as Major Chester Campbell in Peaky Blinders.

Beyond acting, Neill owned the Two Paddocks winery in New Zealand, describing the venture as demanding but satisfying. In tribute, several industry figures highlighted his collaborative nature and personal warmth. > "Like everyone who knew and worked with Sam, I admired him and adored him in equal measure," Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy said. > "Sam was exceptionally collaborative," Jurassic Park director Steven Spielberg added, noting his fondness for the Jurassic franchise family. > "Sam was my beloved lifetime friend," co-star Laura Dern said, calling him a "true and noble gentleman."

Neill’s death prompted reflections on his diverse body of work, from early roles in My Brilliant Career (1979) and The Piano (1993) to later projects such as The Dish (2000), Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016) and Rams (2020). His contributions to cinema and television were widely recognized, and his passing was mourned by both Hollywood peers and community members who remembered him as down-to-earth and approachable.
