US Faces Measles Surge, Cyclospora Outbreak and Egg Recall Amid HHS Leadership Scrutiny

Résumé

The CDC reported a record measles case count, the FDA identified a cyclospora outbreak linked to lettuce and announced a large egg recall, while officials criticized HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s handling of the incidents.

The United States reported a significant rise in measles cases this year, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirming 2,318 infections, the highest number since the disease was declared eliminated over two decades ago. Public health experts attributed the increase to lower vaccination rates. > "This is just going to keep happening in the US unless vaccination rates improve," said Jennifer Nuzzo, director of the Pandemic Center at Brown University School of Public Health. > "It’s going to mean living in a perpetual state of vulnerability and risk until we get vaccination levels up," she added.

Former CDC vaccine advisory committee chair Dr. Jonathan Temte noted a lack of national messaging on vaccination under the current Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) leadership.

Separately, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) expanded the geographic scope of a cyclospora outbreak, a parasitic infection that causes severe diarrhea, to include four additional states. The agency identified iceberg lettuce from a Mexican supplier as the likely source, linking the outbreak to nearly 2,000 infections and about 100 hospitalizations. Senator Jon Ossoff wrote to HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., expressing concern over the agency’s response to the ongoing outbreak.

The FDA also announced a voluntary recall of approximately 1.6 million cartons of eggs produced by Midwest Poultry Services due to potential salmonella contamination, which can cause fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

Critics have called for increased public health communication and vaccination campaigns as the nation confronts these concurrent health challenges.
