Ten Dead After Russian Missile Strike Hits Cargo Ship Near Odesa

Resumen

A Russian cruise-missile attack on a Guinea-Bissau-flagged cargo vessel off Odesa killed ten people, including four Indian nationals, as Ukraine reports a rise in maritime casualties.

A Russian cruise-missile strike on a Guinea-Bissau-flagged cargo ship off the coast of Odesa on Sunday resulted in ten fatalities, Ukrainian authorities said. The attack ignited a fire on the vessel, prompting an all-night search and rescue operation. By Monday, the Ukrainian seaports authority confirmed that nine crew members and one pilot had been killed, and India reported that four of its citizens were among the dead.

Regional head Oleh Kiper told Ukrainian television that 28 people had been killed by Russian strikes in the Odesa region during July. The Indian foreign ministry described the targeting of crew members and the threat to freedom of navigation as "deplorable and should be avoided."

Ukraine relies on the Black Sea corridor for more than two-thirds of its agricultural exports, valued at roughly $9 billion. While Russian forces have limited Ukrainian vessels to the area around Odesa, Ukrainian drones have forced Russian naval assets to remain in protected bases.

Ukraine's prime minister said the government is preparing measures to improve navigation safety and protect civilian vessels. Kiper also noted that public air-raid shelters have been established on 40 beaches, though he warned that seaside locations remain risky due to drone and missile launches from the sea.

Ukrainian drone forces claimed to have struck 183 vessels in July, a figure not independently verified but supported by satellite evidence of damage to multiple ships in the Black Sea and Sea of Azov. Separate Russian attacks elsewhere in the country killed five people in eastern and southern cities.

The United Nations reported that June saw the highest civilian death toll since April 2022, with at least 293 civilians killed and 1,990 injured. Kyiv also continued strikes on Russian logistics facilities, including an oil depot in the Moscow region, after the mayor of Moscow said 400 drones were launched, most of which were intercepted, causing ten injuries.
