UK counterterrorism unit assumes lead in investigation of Ann Widdecombe's death

Resumen

Counterterrorism police have taken over the probe into the killing of former MP Ann Widdecombe after new evidence emerged, and a 28-year-old suspect has been rearrested on terrorism charges.

London, July 13 (Reuters) – Counterterrorism police announced on Monday that they are now leading the investigation into the death of former British MP and former minister Ann Widdecombe, citing new information and evidence. The case was previously handled by Devon and Cornwall Police, which had said there was no indication the killing was terror-related or politically motivated.

A 28-year-old white British man, previously arrested on suspicion of murder, has been rearrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism. The suspect was detained about 320 kilometres from the scene in South Yorkshire and has not yet been charged.

"We now have new information and evidence that means Counter Terrorism Policing is now leading the investigation," said Laurence Taylor, head of National Counterterrorism Policing. "We are pursuing multiple lines of inquiry to establish the motivation for this attack."

Widdecombe, 78, was found with serious injuries at her Devon home on Thursday after an attack estimated to have occurred around 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said she had spoken with the counterterrorism chief on Monday morning and would brief MPs later in the day.

The former Conservative MP, who later joined the far-right Reform Party, was known for socially conservative positions and had appeared on reality-television programmes. Reform UK has reportedly increased security for its members following the incident.

The police have not disclosed the cause of death, and the investigation continues with multiple lines of inquiry into possible motives.
