Sinner defeats Zverev to claim second straight Wimbledon crown
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner beat Alexander Zverev in four sets to win his second consecutive Wimbledon title and fifth Grand Slam overall, rebounding from a recent French Open loss.
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner defeated Alexander Zverev 6-7 (7), 7-6 (2), 6-3, 6-4 on Sunday to secure his second straight Wimbledon championship and his fifth Grand Slam title. The Italian rallied after dropping the opening set and overcame a brief injury scare for Zverev, who slipped and appeared to hyper-extend his right knee in the third set.
Sinner, who had suffered a second-round defeat at the French Open amid extreme heat, said during the trophy ceremony, "There’s no better place to play tennis." Zverev, the reigning French Open champion, remarked, "I’m 29 years old and this is the first time I actually believe I can win this trophy."
The match featured 58 winners from Sinner compared with 49 from Zverev, and Sinner limited his opponent to 25 unforced errors while Zverev made 45. The final was played in clear skies with temperatures around 82 °F (28 °C). Prince William and other members of the Royal Box attended the match.
Zverev’s loss drops him to third in the world rankings, while his compatriot Carlos Alcaraz, who missed both the French Open and Wimbledon due to injury, will remain second.
