Ryanair passenger recounts mid-air incident after window blew out

Résumé

Serbian businessman Ljubisa Karovic survived a Ryanair flight emergency in which a window shattered at 15,000 feet, sustaining burns and a neck injury.

Serbian businessman Ljubisa Karovic, 61, survived a Ryanair flight from Greece to Germany after a window shattered at cruising altitude, leaving him with burns, bruises and a neck injury. The incident occurred when an explosion-like sound was heard, after which the aircraft’s window broke and the cabin depressurised. Karovic, who was seated in 11F, was partially pulled from the plane and lost consciousness.

According to Karovic and his wife, fellow passengers used a bag and then a suitcase to block the opening until the crew could respond. Ryanair said its flight attendants remained seated until the aircraft reached a safe altitude, then assisted Karovic by moving him to a seat beside his wife and arranging for an onboard doctor to attend to him.

"I don't remember much and my head and neck still hurt but I am still alive," Karovic told the Guardian, adding that the seatbelt may have contributed to his survival.

Karovic’s lawyer described the outcome as unexpected, while the airline emphasized compliance with safety procedures throughout the emergency.
