Spain beats Belgium 2-1 to reach World Cup semifinals
Spain faced Belgium in a World Cup quarter-final at SoFi Stadium, a match that would decide a semifinal spot against France, AP News reported. The Spanish side entered the tournament unbeaten and without conceding a goal, while Belgium arrived on a strong run, the same outlet noted. Mikel Merino, who came on as a substitute, scored the decisive 88th-minute rebound after Belgium goalkeeper Senne Lammens mishandled a shot, Yahoo Sports said.
The 2-1 victory secured Spain’s place in the semifinals, where they will meet France, AP News added. Belgium’s efforts to equalize were halted by the late goalkeeper error.
