Merino scores late winner as Spain defeats Belgium to reach World Cup semi-finals
Spain beat Belgium 2-1 with a goal in the 88th minute from substitute Mikel Merino, securing a place in the World Cup semi-finals against France.
Spain advanced to the World Cup semi-finals after a 2-1 victory over Belgium, with substitute Mikel Merino scoring the decisive goal in the 88th minute. The match was tied 1-1 when Merino entered the game with just under five minutes remaining. After Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was forced off with an injury, replacement Senne Lammens failed to hold a shot from Pau Cubarsí, and Merino converted the rebound to give Spain the lead.
Spain had taken the lead early in the second half through a goal by Fabián Ruiz, who capitalised on a rebound after Dani Olmo's effort was saved by Courtois. Belgium equalised shortly after when Charles De Ketelaere headed in from a cross by Timothy Castagne. Both teams created further chances, but Belgium's midfield was disrupted by injuries to Youri Tielemans and later Courtois, who left the field in tears after hurting his thigh.
Coach Luis de la Fuente praised Merino's impact, noting his contribution as a “super-sub”. The win sets up a semi-final clash with France.
