Wildfire in Almería Province Kills 12, Burns 66 sq km
A fast-moving wildfire near Los Gallardos in Almería province killed at least 12 people and forced mass evacuations. The New York Times reported 11 deaths, eight injuries and 19 missing, noting a large firefighting response amid a European heat wave. AP later updated the toll to 12 dead, eight injured and 23 missing as temperatures surged above 40 °C.
BBC said the blaze was sparked by a fallen electricity pole and compelled hundreds of residents to evacuate. Subsequent AP coverage said the fire had burned about 66 sq km, prompting the deployment of hundreds of firefighters and aircraft for rescue and containment.
