Irish police seek asylum seeker linked to New York mother's death in Killarney
A 43-year-old New York mother was found dead in her Killarney home; a post-mortem says she died of suffocation and police are searching for her 28-year-old boyfriend, who fled Ireland.
Irish authorities are investigating the death of Jamey Carney, a 43-year-old mother from New York who was found dead in her Killarney residence on Tuesday. A post-mortem examination by State Pathologist Dr. Linda Mulligan concluded that Carney died from suffocation, despite severe head injuries discovered on her body.
Police say the suspect, 28-year-old Ahmad Alsaqer, who had been staying at the home, left Ireland in the early hours of July 7, before the body was discovered. Gardaí have issued alerts at ports and airports and are probing contacts in Turkey, Syria and Jordan as part of the search.
Carney, who worked for a healthcare consulting firm, had moved to Ireland with her teenage daughter in 2021 after meeting Alsaqer at a pro-Palestinian rally a year and a half earlier. Neighbours reported hearing a loud argument from the house on Monday night.
"(Police) are satisfied that a person of interest in this investigation left the jurisdiction in the early hours of Tuesday prior to the body of the deceased female being discovered," a police statement said.
Family members described Carney as caring and humanitarian, expressing shock at the circumstances of her death.
