NBA expands probe into Clippers' and Kawhi Leonard's financial arrangements

The league's investigation now includes possible undisclosed expenses and a second endorsement deal, prompting speculation of disciplinary action against the Clippers.

The National Basketball Association has broadened its inquiry into the Los Angeles Clippers and forward Kawhi Leonard to examine whether the team covered expenses for Leonard without reimbursement and whether Leonard holds an undisclosed endorsement contract. The investigation is being led by law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The league is also reviewing the team's previously reported arrangement with Aspiration, a sponsor accused of facilitating a no-show endorsement that could have been used to circumvent the salary cap. The Clippers have denied any misconduct, saying the arrangement was compromised by co-founder Joe Sanberg, who was recently sentenced to 14 years in prison.

Former Aspiration employees told reporters that early discussions about using Leonard’s likeness in a promotional campaign—once inspired by a tree-based character from a popular superhero franchise—were halted. One employee recalled being instructed to "stop thinking about Kawhi," while another said the effort "didn't produce anything" and was eventually abandoned.

League insiders say the growing scrutiny could lead to penalties for the franchise, though no specific sanctions have been detailed at this time.
