Iranian missiles strike Emirati tankers in Strait of Hormuz, killing one sailor
Iran's Revolutionary Guard said two supertankers were hit after ignoring warnings, while the United States and Iran exchanged strikes for a third night, prompting diplomatic talks over a proposed shipping fee.
Iran's Revolutionary Guard reported that two Emirati oil tankers were struck by cruise missiles in the Strait of Hormuz after the vessels allegedly ignored warnings, disabled navigation systems and attempted to pass through a mined route. The United Arab Emirates said one sailor was killed and eight others injured in the attacks.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations agency also recorded a tanker hit by an unidentified projectile 40 nautical miles northeast of Oman's Qalhat, though it was not clear if this referred to the same incident.
The missile strikes occurred as Iran announced the closure of the strait, a key conduit for about 20% of global oil shipments, raising concerns about the durability of a recent interim cease-fire agreement and pushing oil prices higher.
The United States and Iran have exchanged attacks for a third consecutive night. President Donald Trump initially announced a 20% fee on vessels transiting the strait, describing the United States as a guardian of the waterway, but later retracted the proposal, stating that the fee would be replaced by trade and investment deals with Gulf states.
"Based on highly productive conversations with Middle East leadership, I have decided to replace the 20% United States Reimbursement Fee with Trade and Investment Deals that the various Gulf States will be making into the United States," Trump wrote on his social platform.
Jordanian forces said they intercepted and shot down four missiles that entered their airspace from Iranian territory. The United Kingdom's foreign ministry confirmed it was in diplomatic contact with the United States regarding the proposed toll and emphasized the need to restore freedom of navigation.
The United States Central Command said it had used unmanned surface vessels to strike a submarine and ship-maintenance facility at Iran's Bandar Abbas naval base, claiming to have degraded Iran's ability to attack commercial shipping.
