Christopher Nolan's IMAX 70mm Adaptation of 'The Odyssey' Revives Sword-and-Sandal Genre
Christopher Nolan's new film, shot entirely in IMAX 70mm, retells Homer's 'The Odyssey' with a cast that includes Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland, marking a rare recent entry in the sword-and-sandal category.
Christopher Nolan's latest feature brings Homer's epic poem to the big screen in a full IMAX 70mm production, a format not previously used for sword-and-sandal movies. The film follows Odysseus, portrayed by Matt Damon, on a ten-year journey home after the Trojan War, confronting mythic obstacles such as goddesses, giants, a cyclops, Scylla and sirens. Back on Ithaca, his wife Penelope, played by Anne Hathaway, and their son Telemachus, played by Tom Holland, contend with a group of suitors vying for Penelope's hand and Odysseus' throne.
"The film aims to blend classic mythic storytelling with modern cinematic technology," a spokesperson for the production said.
The release is noted as a rare high-profile addition to a genre that has seen few recent entries, prompting discussion among critics and audiences about its impact on the revival of sword-and-sandal cinema.
