Partial roof collapse at BJ's Wholesale Club in Ocean Township amid heavy rain
A roof partially gave way at a BJ's Wholesale Club in Ocean Township, New Jersey, on Monday morning, prompting a rescue effort as 27 shoppers were inside during severe flooding.
First responders attended a partial roof collapse at a BJ's Wholesale Club on Route 35 in Ocean Township, Monmouth County, at about 11 a.m. on Monday. The incident occurred after heavy rain caused extensive flooding in the area. Officials said 27 people were inside the store when the roof gave way; two individuals became partially trapped but were able to free themselves and exit safely.
The Monmouth County Sheriff's Office warned the public to avoid the vicinity, describing travel as extremely dangerous. Police specifically asked motorists to stay away from Route 35, Park Avenue and Deal Road, especially between Routes 18 and 35, until further notice.
"This incident is another reminder of how quickly severe weather can create dangerous and unpredictable conditions," Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden said. "We commend all first responders who worked with urgency under challenging circumstances. Despite the ongoing flooding and severe weather affecting our communities, all worked seamlessly together to ensure everyone was safely accounted for.
