Maine Senate Candidate Graham Platner Withdraws from Ballot
Graham Platner has formally withdrawn from the U.S. Senate race in Maine, prompting the Democratic Party to seek a replacement before the July 27 deadline.
The Maine Secretary of State confirmed on Friday, July 10, that Graham Platner requested his name be removed from the U.S. Senate ballot, effectively ending his campaign. The withdrawal follows Platner's July 8 announcement that he was suspending his candidacy. State officials said the removal was submitted in time for the Democratic Party to select a new nominee, with a deadline of July 27 to name a replacement.
Platner posted the letter requesting his removal on the social media platform X without additional comment. In the letter he referenced the June 9 primary, noting that 156,084 voters chose a “new kind of politics,” and expressed gratitude to supporters who had contributed to his campaign.
The secretary of state's office indicated it will soon provide details on the process for the Democrats to nominate a new candidate in the contest for a seat currently held by a Republican.
