Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platten has postponed a series of scheduled campaign events, including town halls in Augusta and Gorham and an event in Sanford, as the July 13 deadline for the party to replace him on the ballot draws near.
The campaign said the Gorham town hall was cancelled because the candidate was "not feeling well," and did not provide further comment on the other cancellations.
The timing follows recent media coverage of allegations against Platten, including reports of past relationships and accusations of abusive behavior, as well as prior controversies involving online comments and a tattoo that featured a Nazi symbol.
Maine Democrats must decide by 5 p.m. on July 13 whether to keep Platten on the ballot or name a replacement to challenge incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins. A recent poll by The New York Times, the Portland Press Herald and Siena College showed Platten leading Collins 49 percent to 47 percent, with 3 percent of respondents undecided.
