Mississippi teen's disappearance and death on Horn Island under investigation

Nolan Wells, an 18-year-old Ocean Springs High School graduate and community-college football player, disappeared on July 4 while on a boat trip with friends to Horn Island, a barrier island off the Mississippi coast. The group returned to the mainland without him, and his family reported him missing that night.

Jackson County Sheriff’s deputies, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources launched a search, later joined by volunteer groups such as the United Cajun Navy. On July 6, officials recovered a body matching Wells’ description from the water near the island’s shoreline. The county coroner, Bruce Lynd, said there were no obvious injuries and that the autopsy would be performed by the state medical examiner’s office to determine cause of death, including toxicology results.

Wells’ parents have retained civil-rights attorney Ben Crump and requested an independent autopsy, citing concerns about the initial assessment that “no foul play was suspected.” The family has asked for transparency and for original photos and video from July 4 to be provided to investigators. Sheriff John Ledbetter said investigators are reviewing eyewitness accounts and physical evidence.

Public interest in the case has been heightened by discussions of racial dynamics, as Wells was the only Black individual in the group photos. Civil-rights activist Ben Crump noted that the family’s independent autopsy was arranged with a pathologist outside Mississippi. The autopsy results are expected soon.

Funding for the family’s expenses has been supported by private donors, including former NFL player Colin Kaepernick and filmmaker Tyler Perry. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the circumstances of Wells’ death.
