Body of Missing Mississippi Teen Identified on Horn Island

Resumen

Authorities confirmed that the remains found on Horn Island belong to 18-year-old Nolan Wells, who disappeared on July 4, and are continuing a drowning investigation.

Mississippi officials said the body recovered on Horn Island on Monday was that of 18-year-old Nolan Wells, who was reported missing after a July 4 boat outing. The Ocean Springs School District verified the identification, and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, aided by the state marine agency, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Cajun Navy, conducted the search of both land and water.

Wells, a senior at Ocean Springs High School and a wide receiver at Southwest Mississippi Community College, was last seen on the northwest tip of the barrier island when his friends left the boat without him. Sheriff John Ledbetter told reporters that investigators do not suspect foul play and that drowning is the likely cause, though the inquiry remains open.

Family members expressed grief on social media, thanking responders for their assistance. OSSH football coach Jake Bramlett said Wells was known for his kindness, leadership and work ethic, adding that he was more than an “outstanding football player.”

The investigation continues as authorities work to determine the exact circumstances of Wells’ death.
