Belgium defeats United States 4-1 to advance to World Cup quarterfinals
Belgium beat the United States 4-1 in the Round of 16, securing a place in the quarterfinals against Spain, while the U.S. and the other co-hosts exit the tournament.
Belgium opened the match with an early lead, scoring in the ninth minute after a defensive lapse by the United States. The United States equalised in the 31st minute through Malik Tillman, but Belgium restored their advantage shortly before halftime with a header from Charles De Ketelaere.
In the second half, a mis-controlled save by U.S. goalkeeper Matt Freese led to a Hans Vanaken goal, and a later injury forced the substitution of midfielder Christian Pulisic.
Belgium introduced substitutes Jérémy Doku and Romelu Lukaku, the latter adding a fourth goal in stoppage time. The win moves Belgium to a quarter-final clash with Spain, while the United States, along with co-hosts Canada and Mexico, are eliminated.
"We are proud of the performance and will focus on the next match," Belgian coach Rudi Garcia said after the game.
"We gave everything and showed why we belong among the top teams," United States manager Mauricio Pochettino added in the post-match interview.
