England defeats Mexico 3-2 to advance to World Cup quarter-finals
England overcame a red card to beat Mexico 3-2 at the Azteca Stadium, securing a quarter-final clash with Norway.
England progressed to the World Cup quarter-finals after a 3-2 victory over Mexico at the Estadio Azteca. Jude Bellingham opened the scoring with a header and added a second goal within two minutes, giving the Three Lions a 2-0 lead. Mexico responded before halftime through Julian Quinonez, reducing the deficit to 2-1.
Early in the second half, defender Jarell Quansah was sent off after a VAR review of a dangerous challenge, leaving England with ten men. Anthony Gordon won a penalty, which Harry Kane converted to restore a two-goal advantage at 3-1. Mexico earned a penalty of their own, and Raul Jimenez scored, bringing the score to 3-2. England held on despite sustained pressure and an extended period of added time.
"The refereeing decisions, it is what it is. It's the World Cup and they are human too," Bellingham said after the match.
"There were two good saves. To come here to the Azteca and put in a performance like that, I am proud," goalkeeper Jordan Pickford added.
England will face Norway, led by Erling Haaland, in the quarter-finals.
