Super Typhoon Bavi devastates Rota and Guam with Category 5 winds
According to the BBC, Super Typhoon Bavi struck Rota in the Northern Mariana Islands, delivering sustained winds of about 290 km/h and gusts up to 350 km/h. The extreme winds prompted the Joint Typhoon Warning Center and local officials to issue evacuation orders and open emergency shelters on the island. Later, NPR reported that the storm moved on to Guam, where Category 5 winds of roughly 180 mph battered the territory. Guam authorities declared a state of emergency and opened additional shelters as the typhoon continued to bring heavy rain.
AP News confirmed that Bavi also affected Tinian and Saipan, reinforcing the widespread impact across the U. S. territories.
