Two injured, suspect dead after early-morning shooting near Hampton Beach

Summary

Police say a 23-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman were hospitalized with gunshot wounds, while the 21-year-old suspect died after shooting himself during a police encounter.

Police responded to a shooting at 29 Ocean Boulevard near Hampton Beach shortly after 1:00 a.m. on Sunday, finding a 23-year-old male and a 25-year-old female with gunshot injuries. Both victims were transported to a hospital for treatment.

Officers later located a suspect at the intersection of P Street and Ashworth Avenue. The individual, identified as 21-year-old Tyshawn Cooper of South Carolina, drew a handgun and shot himself in the head as an officer discharged a weapon.

"During that interaction, the male pulled out a handgun and raised it. He then shot himself in the head while an officer fired one gunshot contemporaneously," the attorney general’s office said.

An autopsy confirmed that the officer’s shot did not cause Cooper’s death. The incident will undergo a full deadly-force investigation, with formal interviews of the officer scheduled for next week. No law-enforcement personnel were injured, and several nearby streets were temporarily closed during the investigation.
