Hundreds of firefighters battle wildfires in Portugal, Greece and Spain
According to AP News, more than 1,200 firefighters from Portugal, Greece, Spain and Italy fought multi-day wildfires that burned thousands of hectares in central Portugal, the Thessaloniki area and the Girona region. Portugal’s civil protection officials coordinated the response and deployed ground crews to contain the blaze in the Vouzela district. Greek authorities dispatched firefighting aircraft, including water-dropping planes, to protect the Mandra area near Thessaloniki.
Spanish firefighting units, supported by the Catalan Fire Service, sent additional crews and operated aerial drops over the Girona province. Evacuation alerts were issued for residents in the affected zones as the combined effort continued to suppress the fires.
