Thousands of teens gather on Newport Beach peninsula, prompting mass arrests and police dispersal
Around 400 people were arrested after a large crowd of teenagers and young adults gathered on Newport Beach's Balboa Peninsula on Saturday night, an event police attribute to a viral social-media post.
Police in Newport Beach reported an unexpected influx of thousands of teenagers and young adults on the Balboa Peninsula Saturday night, leading to a large-scale dispersal and 402 arrests between midnight Friday and 6 a.m. Sunday – a 570 % increase over the same period last year. The Newport Beach Police Association said a viral TikTok post may have drawn the crowd, though investigators have not identified a single source and the inquiry remains open.
Law enforcement officials noted that many of those detained were not local residents, with arrests recorded for individuals from Arizona, Nevada, the Inland Empire, San Diego, Los Angeles and other Orange County cities. Officers issued a dispersal order after reports of unruly behavior, including fireworks, littering, road blockages and attempts to damage vehicles. By 8:25 p.m., the department declared an unlawful assembly and called for backup from 17 neighboring agencies, deploying roughly 350 officers.
"This was on another level," said Newport Beach Police Lt. Eric Little, describing the scale of the disturbance.
"Monitoring takes time and cops have to find ways to become members and that is very hard," said retired Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department commander Mike Parker, noting the growing use of private messaging apps for event coordination.
The city closed the beaches at 10:50 p.m., halted traffic into the peninsula, and did not reopen the area to vehicles until about 3 a.m. Sunday. Councilmember Joe Stapleton said the incident highlights the need for improved public-safety planning and social-media monitoring, adding that the city will work with officials and residents to prevent similar events in the future.
