Eight injured, including four children, in Coney Island Fourth of July shooting

Summary

A gunfire incident at a family cookout near Coney Island beach wounded eight people, four of them children, according to New York City police.

Police said a shooting occurred Saturday night at a Fourth of July cookout held in the courtyard of an apartment building about a block from Coney Island beach. A suspect wearing a black mask opened fire on a family gathering and then fled, leaving eight victims wounded, including four children aged 6, 7, 12 and 14. Police recovered a firearm at the scene.

"One of the victims, a 21-year-old woman, is in critical condition while the others are stable and expected to survive," Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said. The incident took place near the location of the annual Nathan’s hot-dog eating contest held earlier that day. No prior disturbances were reported at the gathering.
