Paul Pelosi may face misdemeanor charge after hitting parked car in California
The 86-year-old husband of former Speaker Nancy Pelosi is being referred to prosecutors for a possible misdemeanor after a collision that damaged a parked vehicle and led him to leave the scene.
Police said Paul Pelosi was driving a brown convertible in Yountville, California, on Friday when he struck a legally parked car, stopped briefly, and then drove away. A witness called 911, and deputies later located Pelosi’s vehicle about a quarter of a mile from the scene with damage to its front end. He told officers he knew he had hit something but could not recall the exact circumstances.
The Napa County sheriff’s office reported that Pelosi, 86, had no alcohol in his system and was not arrested. Because no injuries occurred, officials recommended a misdemeanor charge for fleeing the scene of an accident and referred him to the Department of Motor Vehicles for a driving-ability review, a routine step for older drivers.
A spokesperson for the Pelosi family said Paul had apologized to the owner of the damaged vehicle and would take responsibility for the repair costs, while Nancy Pelosi declined further comment. The incident follows a 2022 guilty plea by Paul Pelosi to a DUI misdemeanor, for which he served a brief jail term, completed probation, attended a drinking-driver program, installed an ignition interlock device, and paid restitution and fines. Earlier that year, an intruder attacked the Pelosis at their San Francisco home, resulting in a life sentence for the assailant.
