Marlins unlikely to trade Alcantara, could explore deal for Garrett

Resumen

Miami is expected to retain former Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara through 2027, while left-hander Braxton Garrett may become a trade candidate as the club evaluates its rotation options.

Miami's 12-game losing streak, which ended last night, has lowered the team's playoff prospects, leaving them at 53-54 and two games behind in the wild-card race. Despite the slump, the Marlins are not expected to move former NL Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara, who is under contract through 2027 with a $21 million club option.

"Alcantara is not on the trade block," said Craig Mish of Sportsgrid and Marlins.tv, emphasizing the club's intention to keep the 30-year-old pitcher.

Alcantara has logged a league-leading 143 2/3 innings this season with a 4.01 ERA and has improved his performance since June, posting a 3.29 ERA over his last ten starts. The team views him as a core piece of the rotation and may consider extending his contract to quell future trade speculation.

Conversely, left-hander Braxton Garrett, a former top draft pick, is attracting interest from several clubs. After a strong 2022-23 campaign, a UCL injury sidelined him for the remainder of 2024 and all of 2025. In Triple-A Jacksonville this year, Garrett has recorded a 2.32 ERA over 73 2/3 innings with a 27.2% strikeout rate, though he struggled in a recent outing. He remains under team control for two additional seasons at a $1.525 million salary.

Marlins officials have not indicated a plan to promote Garrett despite injuries to other starters, and the front office, now led by former Rays GM Peter Bendix, appears cautious about his role. Several teams, including the Diamondbacks, Cubs, Brewers, White Sox, Rays, Padres, Rangers, Twins, Phillies and Braves, have been mentioned as potential suitors should the Marlins decide to trade him.
